I work at the Vest Conservatory for Writers in Milwaukee, WI. I have published poems in Airplane Reading, California Quarterly, Spectrum and others. I was nominated for the Pushcart prize in 2013, and I am currently working on a collection.
27th Street / Highway 41
Tired, old motels: Knotty Pine Inn, Value Inn,
Trucker’s Retreat. Low slung, single story
buildings. The infamous Buckthorn Tavern
where a guy stumbled out one night, and ran
over and killed two people as they carried
Christmas gifts. The Boots Inn where waitresses
are cowgirls in too tight jean shorts. A mechanical
bull sits empty. Strip mall dollar, value stores.
A Walgreen's on the corner. Tractor trailers. On
The Border: Gentleman’s Club. This is the old
Highway 41. It runs from Northern Wisconsin
to Chicago. This is the old road of motels and
roadhouses. This is the tumble-down life
on the edge of a dollar bill.
